Benefits of Aromatherapy

The use of oils, for healing as well as for their fragrance, has been around for thousands of years. The term "aromatherapy" was coined in the 1920s by French chemist Rene-Maurice Gattefosse.

Aromatherapy is considered an alternative medicine in the field of healing arts. There are studies that have provided information as to how helpful the use of aromatherapy can be for certain types of medical problems such as headaches and muscle pains. It is supposed to be very good for those who have psychosomatic aches and pains brought on by either mental or emotional stress and are not physical.

Natural oils are used in aromatherapy. Known as essential oils, they provide the aroma. The oils are extracted from different parts of plants and then processed Aromatherapyand bottled. For example, jasmine and rose come from the leaves of the jasmine and rose plants. Some plants such as the Orange tree, for example, produce oils from its flowers and from other parts of the plant.

The antiseptic properties of these oils can be therapeutic by getting rid of bacteria and cleansing the body of germs. The aromatherapy oils may also stimulate the immune system to help the body fight infections and illness.

Essential oils are sometimes applied to the skin to clean wounds, cuts, and abrasions. You have to be careful when applying the oils onto the skin because they may cause an allergic reaction. Before applying an essential oil, you test a patch of skin that will be hidden by your clothing. If you are allergic to the oil, your skin will become red and swollen after about 12 hours.

If you are feeling stressed in your everyday life, aromatherapy can help ease the tension.
